4 Great Trends in Philadelphia Wedding Photography

Philadelphia wedding photography is one of those fields that melds the traditional with the modern. There’s always something new that my couples are asking for. I thought I might as well share some of the stuff that I love! Here are a few current trends in wedding photography that I’ve both seen and used in my work:

Shooting the Proposal

Conspiring with a groom to surprise his bride-to-be? What could be better? Shooting the proposal is one of the best modern wedding photography ideas there is. The best part is that I get to be part of a couple’s wedding story, from proposal to the very last moments of their reception.

First Looks

The moment when a groom sees his bride for the first time is always emotional, whether it’s at the other end of the aisle or not! I have to say, I’m a big fan of the first look before the ceremony. It gives the bride and groom some time to regroup and just be with each other before the festivities start. Their chemistry definitely adds something to the images I’ll capture during that time.

Neck-Down Shots

Consider the way a couple holds each other, the delicacy of the bride’s hands clasped around her bouquet, or how mom laces up the back of the bride’s dress. Depending on the shot, these things will speak volumes by themselves.

Part of my job as a photographer is to capture these moments. However, the most important part comes later! I hand-edit each image to tell the story of your wedding, from start to finish. This can turn a good image into a great one! Sometimes, all that needs to be said in a photo can be said with body language. It might seem counterintuitive, but cropping out heads can be the best choice for some images.

Backlighting

Backlighting adds breathtaking drama to any photo. I love to use this technique for couple’s portraits, but shots of the bride bathed in a warm, soft glow just take the cake. One of my favorite images from last year was part of the gothic-inspired She Walks in Beauty styled shoot that was featured on Burnett’s Boards!

I worked on the shoot with some fabulous vendors, including Creative Eventology and Make Me Glam. April Lynn Designs, who did all of the paper, blogged about the shoot back in November. You can see the image I’m talking about in her post.
