The Importance of Trust for Your Documentary Session

Is it possible to feel comfortable with someone you don’t really know following you through your life, the life of your family, and all the ups and downs that make up any given day? That’s a fair question. And I think in order to answer it, I need to tell you a bit of why I love doing these sessions and why I feel they are important. Because one of the keys to trust is knowing the other person personally. So, I’m about to get personal here.

We live in the age of cell phones. Everyone has a camera in their back pocket. And while this results in gigabytes of images, there are several problems that come with this method of documenting life. I have an entire post about this, but one of the biggest issues is that someone is always left out. Selfies can only do so much (and really, unless you’re an influencer or teenager, most of us don’t get down with selfies). So, someone is almost always missing from the picture. And by and large, it’s moms.

As a mom myself, I know this struggle well. You want to capture these moments because sometimes the feeling of time passing is tangible. You take these pictures because when you get the kids to bed, usually in a frenzy of teeth-brushing and wildness, ten minutes after they’re asleep you scroll through your phone cause you miss them. You have pictures to share on Instagram, and ones that no one will ever see. But they’re all on your phone, and they’re almost all missing you. Moms, you are one of the most important things in the life of your children. You should be in pictures with them! That’s why I love these sessions.

I get to be the one to show you the beauty of the life you’ve created. I get to show you how your words strengthen and soothe, teach and correct, inspire joy and instill love. I get to capture their reactions, including the ones you don’t see. These behind the scenes moments are another reason I love A Day in the Life. This is especially true for families with multiple children. There are moments you just don’t see happen. And sometimes there are seriously beautiful things happening there.

This gets at the heart of these sessions. Literally, the love for these sessions flows from a heart of wanting to show people that they matter. They matter so much. Parents, you matter to your kids. Kids, you matter to your parents. All the way to the four-legged members of your family. Your life matters. I want to show you that and give you the chance to look back, years later, and see that it did, and still does.

So, that’s my why. And that’s how I can ask you to allow me to tag along for the day. These sessions aren’t just something I enjoy, they’re something I genuinely believe in. You and your family’s legacy are something I believe in. I want you to see it for yourself in these images.
