What Exactly is a Documentary Day in the Life Family Session?

There are a lot of family sessions out there. And maybe when you hear family session, you think blue jeans and white shirts on the beach, or an angelic newborn baby swaddled up tight. That is not what these “day in the life” sessions are. These moments are supremely real, true to life, unstaged, and they matter so much.

But maybe that doesn’t help you visualize what they really are. So, here’s a few things that A Day In the Life sessions ARE, and a few that they AREN’T.

  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE inclusive of everyone in your immediate family.
This may mean that someone has to take off work (even if it’s just a half day), or coordinate schedules so everyone is around. But you should all be present and accounted for. This includes any four legged members of the family as well!
  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE a normal day.
Go about your business as you normally would. Our goal is to not disrupt your life at all! So, go about your day, run your errands, make dinner, hang out together. Do everything as you would and leave the capturing of your story to us! You do not have to manufacture moments.
  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE FUN!
You may find that having someone around to capture your family’s unique everyday moments heightens your experience of them. Plus, I like to think I’m pretty cool to spend a day with.

Just as important as knowing what to expect from A Day in the Life sessions is knowing what NOT to expect from A Day in the Life. Here are just a few things that these documentary sessions ARE NOT:

  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE NOT posed in any way.
This is not a knock on any other photographer who takes a more hands on approach to capturing families. But these sessions are meant to capture your family as you interact naturally with one another. I’ll bring the creativity, you just do you.
  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE NOT judgmental at all.
Being mothers (human and canine) and wedding photographers, Ashley & I have seen it all. I’m not there to judge your life, I am there to find the moments of beauty that are precious and capture them for you. I promise that if there’s some laundry that needs folded, or the kids are having a screaming match in the living room, or the dog rips open a bag of treats, I’ll roll with it with zero judgment, and help you find the beauty and humor in those moments too!
  • A Day in the Life sessions ARE NOT an extravagance.
In an age where everyone is an amateur photographer, capturing your family through the lens of a photojournalistic professional photographer becomes even more important. A friend of mine once defined this very well, there are snapshots and there are photographs. You should have beautiful photographs created of your family to accompany the hundreds of snapshots you’ve taken. As the years go by, and phones are replaced (hopefully with a faithful back up), these are the images you will look at to relive your family’s journey. The investment is worth it because your family’s legacy is worth it.

If this resonates with you, then let’s talk! I’d be happy to tell you more and set a time to capture your family’s unique stage of life!
