I find the first dance to be one of the most romantic wedding traditions. Still, it’s not uncommon for even my extroverted Center City wedding photography clients to be a bit nervous about it! When the lights go down and all eyes are on you as husband and wife, you should feel relaxed and happy, not stiff and awkward. Here are my tips for loosening up during your first dance:
Keep It Simple
The first dance is such a big moment, but don’t feel like you have to plan an elaborate dance routine. Most people hold each other close and sway to the music, just like you did on prom night! You might want to add in a slow rotation every once in a while so that I can get a few different angles of your faces, but overall there’s no reason your first dance should be overly complicated.
If you do opt for dance lessons, keep it short and sweet. People will definitely leave their chairs to watch for the first couple of minutes, but any longer and people will start to get bored.
Practice
Regardless of whether you’ll do a choreographed dance or not, practice dancing to your first dance song at least once. You’ll get a better idea of how you move together, which can help you feel more comfortable when all eyes are on you.
Talk To Me
If you have anything special planned for your first dance, or anything specific you want me to capture, tell me about it! I’ll arrive with the right lights and a plan in place for how I can capture everything.
Look Up
First dance photos are all about you guys gazing adoringly into each others’ eyes, or closing them as you hold one another close. If you’re staring at your feet as you dance, those shots will be pretty hard to capture! That’s one of the reasons why keeping it simple and practicing any choreography are so important. If you’re well-prepared, your first dance should feel natural and not awkward.
Don’t Talk
Whispering sweet nothings is romantic and sweet, but try to keep from talking the whole time, and avoid mouthing the words to your song. I know it’s hard not to do, but it’ll make it easier for me to get shots of you with both of your mouths closed. If you just can’t help but sing along to your favorite line, that’s okay! As long as you give me most of the song to photograph your blissful faces.
