Bridal details get a lot of attention on a couple’s wedding day. They serve to set the scene for any wedding story, whether it’s traditional or avant garde, formal or more casual. The thing that a lot of people forget, Center City wedding photography professionals included, is that the groom’s details are just as important! I always ask my clients if they’d like me and my second shooter to split up during the getting ready stages. I usually recommend that we do. That way, both the bride’s and the groom’s details are fully represented in the photos.
As a future groom, you might be asking yourself what kinds of accessories are even available to you. Obviously, there are your wedding ring, your shoes, and your tie, but there are lots of other details that I would love to capture! Here are some examples of things that grooms typically don on their wedding day:
- For formal events, you have a choice of wearing a cummerbund or vest underneath your jacket. A cummerbund is a band of pleated fabric worn around the waist, and is typically part of a tuxedo ensemble. A vest is a little more versatile, and it has the added bonus of not looking odd when you take your jacket off.
- Cuff links are like earrings for your wrists! They can make a big statement, especially if you can find a pair that reflects an interest of yours. You can find them with almost anything inscribed on them, or in almost any shape, especially if you search on Etsy!
- A stud set is four little pieces of jewelry that are used in place of buttons on a formal shirt. Most tuxedos come with them. If you’re going with creative cufflinks, find a stud set that will complement but not exactly match them.
- Watches are a must for your wedding day, both for their aesthetic value and for keeping the time! If you and your fiancée will be exchanging gifts before the ceremony, they also make great groom gifts. If your lady tries to talk you out of buying a watch to complete your outfit, take the hint!
- Pocket squares are little-thought-of accessories that really pull an outfit together. Pick one out to complement your tie to really take your ensemble to the next level. You can also have a little fun with how you fold your pocket square. Here’s a handy guide!
- Belts or suspenders are both utilitarian and stylish. The rule is that your belt should match your shoes, but with suspenders, you have a bit more freedom. Whatever you do, don’t wear both! That’s considered a fashion faux pas in most circles.
