Winter isn’t everybody’s favorite season. It’s cold, snow makes it hard to get around, and it’s often overcast and dreary. This makes winter brides a rare breed. Despite the challenges, I have to say, I always look forward to winter work as a Chester County wedding photographer.
Winter can yield some of the most unique and interesting wedding portraits. If you’re an out-of-the-box thinker, and you don’t mind braving the cold for the sake of a gorgeous photo, you might just be a winter bride!
Shooting in a Winter Wonderland
Winter weather might be a pain for some, but we wedding photographers hope for snow on a wedding day. It makes for simply magical portraits! I’ll always head outside, regardless of the weather, as long as the bride and groom are game. Natural light is incredibly flattering. Snow really kicks it up a notch, acting as a natural light deflector.
Bundling Up
Accessories aren’t just there to punch up your outfit. A wedding photographer will see them as ways to add interest to your wedding photos. Winter is an excuse to swaddle yourself in knits, angora, wool, and fur. You’ll be thankful for the warmth when we venture out into the cold for snowy portraits. So will your wedding party!
Color Possibilities
Winter really changes the game as far as color palettes go. Red really pops against a snowy background, and it’s the perfect theme for a holiday wedding. A New Year’s Eve wedding is an excuse for an all-out explosion of glitter, if that’s your thing. I like the idea of coating champagne bottles in craft glitter and using them as centerpieces.
Apart from your holiday options, you’re free to go in almost any direction with your color palette. Rustic-themed weddings can incorporate birch, pinecones, and string lights. More modern brides might go with a black-and-white theme. Crystal, gold, and silver are all accents for a glamorous winter wedding.
Comfort Food
There is no season where it’s more satisfying to sit down to a piping hot meal. Serve your guests soup, macaroni and cheese, or mashed potatoes, and you’ll have them wrapped around your finger. For even more guest satisfaction, set up a s’mores or hot chocolate bar at the reception. It’ll be something fun to do when people are taking breaks from dancing, and give them that warm, fuzzy feeling that only a winter wedding can provide!
