Philadelphia Wedding Photographer | Guys’ Guide: Hats

Generally speaking, the hat-sporting groom is on his way out. I’m not sure if it’s a sign of the times, or if there are just too many accessories out there for guys. I feel like sometimes, dudes are a little reluctant to go all-out. Dressing to the nines is traditionally the bride’s territory. That doesn’t mean it has to be that way! A sweet lid can complete your getup, and as your Philadelphia wedding photographer, you know I love another detail to play with.

Here are a few examples of common wedding hats, along with a few great reasons to wear each one:

Fedoras

The fedora has had a rough go of it lately. Once the quintessential hat for men, it has embodied everything from 1920s gangsters to a certain professor-cum-adventurer. It’s been signature of poseurs and wannabes for too long! It’s time for formalwear to take back the fedora with a vengeance.

Another fedora-esque option is the homburg. You might recognize it as the one Al Pacino wore in The Godfather–hence the reason why this hat is often referred to as a “Godfather”.

Top Hats

The staple of men’s formal hats, the top hat is rarely used these days. It is so formal that it’s usually only seen at the most traditional black-tie weddings. If gloves, a walking stick, and a tuxedo will be part of your wedding wardrobe, consider donning a top hat, as well!

A few more traditions to go along with the traditional top hat: It is only to be worn outdoors or in the lobby of a public place! As he enters the ceremony venue, the groom should give his hat to his witness (or the best man). If the celebration is outdoors, out of respect for the occasion, he should also take it off. If gloves and a walking stick are also part of the groom’s attire, they are also entrusted to his witness.

Cowboy Hats

Cowboy hats come in many varieties, but all are perfect for a rustic wedding! Try a ten-gallon hat for a true cowboy wedding–one where the bride and bridesmaids all wear cowboy boots. And maybe everybody could ride to the venue on horseback? Okay, you got me, I just want to take horsie pictures…

A stetson or a Boss of the Plains hat will do just fine for a less literal translation of rustic-chic. If your wedding will be in a barn, if your groomsmen will wear suspenders, and/or if there will be mason jars on your tables, consider this hat to complete your outfit!
