I love wedding details! If you’ve perused my Philadelphia wedding photography repertoire, you’ll see a lot of ring shots. You might notice something: most of the time, there are three rings!
This is because the bride wears her engagement ring on her left hand until the ceremony, when she moves it to her right. The ring that the groom puts on her finger is a wedding band. However, the groom traditionally only has one ring, which he takes off and the bride puts back on again as they say “I do”.
If you don’t want a wedding band, that is always an option for you, too! You can put your engagement band in a box along with your guy’s ring and he can put it onto your finger at the altar. However, many gorgeous engagement rings come as a set with a wedding band, and putting it on with your engagement ring looks phenomenal! These “combination rings” are available virtually anywhere you’d buy an engagement ring.
Of course, you can also choose to have your engagement ring and wedding ring be completely separate. Some people like to exchange the engagement ring for a wedding ring that they’ll wear after they’re married, especially if they’re planning a longer engagement.
Another idea buy two that look nice together as well as apart, so you can wear your engagement ring some of the time and your wedding ring all the time. This works for women who find that their engagement ring setting tends to snag on clothing. However, if you really love your engagement ring, you can absolutely wear both.
Bottom line? Your wedding band symbolizes your union. It also really adds something to ring shots! So if your engagement ring is a combination ring, or you find one that fits perfectly alongside it on your finger, go ahead and get one. Likewise, if you find another ring that you’d like to wear in addition to or instead of your engagement ring, do it!
