I love an adventurous bride, because I’m an adventurous Philadelphia wedding photographer! I’m always up for anything. That includes trekking outside even during the most frigid winter weather.
That’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay! However, if you are willing to come outside with me, I can promise you some breathtaking photos. I’ve already blogged about why I love winter weddings–if you feel the same, here are some ideas for getting great photos outdoors:
Pop of Color
A white wedding dress doesn’t usually have a lot of impact against a snowy backdrop. If you’re game for snow photos, consider going with a cream or subtly tinted gown. You could also choose a bright coat, a richly colored fur cape, or another accessory that will provide lots of contrast. Red’s a great color for snow, but any deep jewel tone will do!
Keeping Warm
I know from experience that fur is by far the best way to stay warm in cold weather. It also lends a glamorous, old-Hollywood feel to any wedding! If that’s not your thing, there are lots of other ways to make sure you don’t freeze. A punk rock bride could wear arm warmers and a cool hat, and a casual-meets-bridal look could be achieved with an ordinary North Face jacket. You’ll also be glad to know that lumberjack chic is in very right now. This is an excuse to wear a fur-lined bomber hat, a plaid scarf, mittens, and a parka!
It’s also a good idea to maximize the skirt on your wedding gown: Wear thick, thermal or fleece leggings. Have a pair of waterproof boots on hand, as well. You can wear your pretty heels down the aisle, but you’ll be thankful for some boots to change into if we decide to walk out into the snow!
Poses & Props
If its actively snowing outside, you can add interest to your photos–and stay dry–with a bright umbrella. Shots of your groom holding it for you, or of you kissing beneath it, will be so romantic! Winter weather can also bring gusts of wind. Not exactly a recipe for a toasty couple, but we can use the wind to blow your veil behind you, or around to envelope you both. It’s surprisingly warm under there, and it looks really beautiful.
Other winter activities can make for super fun photos: sledding, snowball fights, building a snowman, even ice skating! Decide what you want to do before hand and let me know your plans. I’ll do everything I can to keep you warm and happy while we capture your wedding day.
