I’ve recently begun the daunting task of rebranding and through this have reached out again to my dear friend and amazing custom stationer April at ALH Designs. She is really one of the best designers a Chester County Wedding Photographer could go to for branded stationery (and the best for brides looking for invites). I really had no idea what went into the design process, so she has helped me through my process and also taken the time to answer a few questions that I thought would help brides who haven’t designed their own stationery in the past (and if you have, why haven’t you sent me a card already?!)
1. How did you get started designing wedding stationery?
Growing up I always loved art class and when I was a sophomore in high school I was introduced to graphic design and immediately fell in love it. It wasn’t until I was asked to design both of my best friends’ wedding invitations that my love for weddings and graphic design was combined into a new found love designing wedding stationery. Wedding stationery is my specialty, but I do work in all areas of graphic design.
2. What is your favorite color combination right now?
My favorite color combination is anything with mint right now. This color looks fabulous with so many others and I love how versatile it is!
3. What is your favorite typeface right now?
Anything that looks handwritten and unique. Being a designer, my tastes constantly change, so right now some of my favorites are: Alana, Janda Celebration Script, Mishka, Kailey, Graduate and Katie Rose.
(On an aside: I love Al Charisma & Before the Rain ;D)
4. What are some of the aspects of stationery design that somebody who was unfamiliar with the industry would be unaware of?
If you want to create something memorable it must first be noticed. Your invitation is the first thing that your guests receive and this is just a sneak peek of what your day will look like. From the colors, to the design, to the paper and printing technique, your choices set the mood for your memorable event. I highly suggest working with an invitation designer who can create your vision for you! It is helpful to be prepared with your color palette, inspirational images, invitation styles you like, and fabric swatches so we can ensure that all items will coordinately nicely with your event. I also suggest creating a cohesive look, so that your wedding day stationery (ceremony programs, escort cards, seating charts, table numbers, menus, thank you cards, etc.) coordinate with your invitations.
5. What is one thing you think all brides should know about your line of work?
All of my work is custom and whether you are hosting a small wedding or a large soiree, there are countless possibilities to accommodate your budget while maintaining elegance and style.
Thanks April for helping me personally (and answering these burning questions for my readers!)
