Philadelphia Wedding Photography | Preparing For Your Engagement Session

I offer a romance session as part of all my Philadelphia wedding photography packages—this can mean any photography session extraneous to your wedding day. A lot of people choose to make theirs an engagement session, and I’m a huge fan of them!

An engagement session is important for a lot of reasons, some of which I discussed in this post from last June. It can serve as a test run of how you photograph together as a couple, how I work with you, and you’ll have some amazing yet casual photos of you as a result.

Here are a few tips on how to prepare for your engagement session:

What To Wear (And Not Wear)

This is one of my most frequently asked questions about engagement shoots. I always tell couples to wear what they’re most comfortable in! If you have a dress that you can’t keep in your closet because you wear it so often, that’s the one you should wear to your engagement session.

Avoid white, as it washes you out, and don’t feel like you and your significant other have to wear matching outfits. I prefer that you wear solid, bold colors that coordinate, but avoid loud patterns or huge logos, since they can be distracting.

Where To Go

The short answer? Wherever you want! A lot of couples decide to have their engagement shoot at a location with some sentimental value, like where they had their first date, or where they met. Chester County has so many great spots for engagement shoots—here’s a short list with a few ideas.

What To Do

Posing as a couple for the first time can feel stiff and unnatural, but that’s okay! That’s what your engagement session is for. I’m there to help you get used to posing, and believe me, I’ll never tell you to do something that doesn’t look good. If you’re nervous, you can practice posing in a mirror before your session.

I’m also a huge fan of props, so if there’s something you like to do together as a couple, bring it along! Board games, bicycles, musical instruments, and even pets make great additions to your engagement photos. I’m also more than happy to shoot photos of you holding signs for your save the dates or invitations.
