Using a Veil in Center City Wedding Photography

The veil is one of the most iconic wedding accessories. More and more brides are going without one, though. It’s not hard to understand why! A veil can seem like a hindrance for your mobility. Not to mention that attaching it to your hairdo can be tricky, and it’s even more tricky to make it stay in there. Pinning your hair up with bobby pins all day isn’t right for everyone. Still, if I have to choose a side, I have to say that I’m pro-veil. It’s is one of my favorite props that I often use in wedding photography. It’s such a versatile fashion! Plus, in my opinion, anything that adds romance and drama to your portraits will always be a plus.

Here are just a few ways I can feature your beautiful veil in your wedding photographs:

Details

The ideal backdrop for your wedding day details has just enough visual interest without distracting you from the main focus. A veil is perfect for this purpose! It catches the light beautifully  and can add in texture in some really interesting fabulous ways.

Draping your veil over another backdrop, like a leather ottoman, creates a unique layering effect. I love to arrange it into a little nest and strategically place earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings in its creases. It can also be draped over bouquets, shoes, and other larger accessories.

Bridal Portraits

A veil can turn up the drama on your bridal portraits! That is, if your wedding photographer knows how to use it. We can float it around you for an ethereal effect, or have you swish it around yourself playfully. A light breeze is our friend if we’re outside (just avoid tornados). Even a cathedral-length veil can stream out behind you as long as we have a stiff breeze–or a quick assistant!

Close-up portraits are another opportunity for veils to shine. Putting it over your face can create a pretty effect, but birdcage and visor-length veils are particularly well suited for close-ups. French netting can create a cool, vintage effect, especially in a black-and-white photo.

Couple’s Portraits

A veil is a great tool for more intimate portraits, like those we’ll take during your first look and couple’s sessions. I like to encourage couples to nuzzle in close by enveloping them in the bride’s veil. Kisses and snuggles are that much more romantic with a veil over you both!
